Semigroups generated by first order differential operators

This talk concerns the operator semigroups generated by a (possibly singular) linear first order complete differential operator defined on an interval of the real line. We give a characterization of the operators that generate a semigroup or a group in $L^p$ spaces or in spaces of continuous functions. These results are applied to second order operators.
