Stable degeneration limits and asymptotic behaviour in quantum gravity

We discuss recent progress in understanding infinite distance limits in the complex structure moduli space of Calabi-Yau threefolds from the perspective of string theory compactifications. A combined algebraic and a geometric approach yields an interpretation of the asymptotic physics in agreement with general ideas about the universal behaviour of quantum gravity in parametric weak coupling regimes.
